#9 Middlebury Pulls Away From SUNY New Paltz 77-61

The #9 Middlebury men's basketball team held off a late rally to defeat SUNY New Paltz 77-61 in the opening game of the Eastern Holiday Invitational. With the win, the Panthers will take on Eastern Connecticut State University in the championship game on Friday at 2:00 p.m.
 
HIGHLIGHTS
  • Middlebury opened up an early 10-5 edge with 2:44 elapsed, following a three pointer from Noah Osher.
  • Osher provided the spark on offense throughout the first half, recording his 10th point on a jump shot at the 12:03 mark, to keep the lead at five (19-14).
  • The Hawks kept pace with the Panthers, cutting the deficit to just one (24-23) following a shot from beyond the arc by Rylan Blondo with 8:40 remaining. 
  • Middlebury rattled off 12 unanswered points over the next 2:17, with Sam Stevens and Osher connecting on back-to-back threes to take a commanding 36-23 advantage.
  • The Panthers continued to extend their advantage, closing out the first half on a 13-6 run. Evan Flaks was crucial during the span, contributing nine points to help Middlebury take a 49-29 lead at the break.
  • Out of the intermission, New Paltz got out to a fast start, rattling off a 13-0 run to close the gap to seven (49-42) with 15:01 left. 
  • The Hawks pulled to within five with 11:02 remaining in the game, as Blondo sank a pair of free throws to make the score 53-48.
  • With the Panthers leading by just two with 4:25 to go, Alex Sobel took over, scoring three consecutive layups, and recording a steal to increase the advantage to eight (67-59).
  • Middlebury would allow just two more points over the final 4:25, and would go on to see out the victory 77-61.
NOTES
  • Flaks poured in a career-high 13 points during the triumph.
  • Sobel registered four blocks in tonight's contest, marking 35 straight games with a rejection, while falling just two assists shy of a triple-double (16 points, 14 rebounds, eight assists).
  • Middlebury has now faced SUNY New Paltz three times, winning each of those matchups.
  • The Panthers and Eastern Connecticut State have played just twice before, with Middlebury emerging victorious in both contests.
