#9 Men’s Basketball Claims Eastern Holiday Invitational

The #9 Middlebury men's basketball team edged Eastern Connecticut State University (ECSU) 67-62 in the championship game of the Eastern Holiday Invitational. The Panthers won the opening game against SUNY New Paltz to claim the crown. The squad will open NESCAC play at Hamilton on Friday, January 6.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • Trailing 6-4, Middlebury rattled off nine unanswered points, with Evan Flaks knocking down three consecutive jumpers to give the Panthers a 13-6 edge with 8:03 elapsed in the first half.
  • The Warriors battled back, and a three-pointer by Tyreice Woods with 9:32 remaining in the half gave the hosts a one-point advantage (17-16).
  • At the 5:45 mark, ECSU took a 23-20 advantage as Jalen Williams converted on a driving layup.
  • With the Warriors leading 28-25, a layup from Alex Sobel brought the Panthers to within one (28-27) heading into the halftime break. 
  • Trailing 47-43 midway through the second stanza, the Panthers went on a 7-0 run, capped by a free-throw from Jaden Bobbett for a 50-47 lead.
  • With the score level at 50-50, Middlebury took control of the game, going on an 8-3 run. Sobel scored six of the eight points to give the Panthers a 58-53 edge with 3:33 left. 
  • Middlebury was able to see out the final three and a half minutes, connecting on five free throws down the stretch to claim the Eastern Holiday Invitational Championship by a score of 67-62. 
NOTES
  • Sam Stevens, Flaks and Sobel each earned all-tournament team honors, while Sobel received the Player of the Tournament Award. 
  • Stevens has now connected on at least one three-pointer in 26 of 29 career games played.
  • With his 26 points today, Sobel has scored 20 or more points in seven games this season, 
  • Sobel recorded four blocks in today's triumph, marking 36-straight contests with at least one blocked shot.
  • The Panthers have now defeated the Warriors in each of the three contests in the all-time series.
  • With the victory, Middlebury reached 10 wins in the first semester of action for the first time since the 2019-20 season.
