Defense Sparks Panthers Victory Over Union

The Middlebury women's basketball led from wire to wire, pulling away from Union 49-28 to close out first-semester action. The win was the Panthers' third-consecutive triumph. Defense was key for Middlebury, as it held Union to 28 points, and 21 percent from the field, while forcing 17 turnovers.
 
HIGHLIGHTS
  • The hosts began the contest on a 12-2 run capped by a pair of free throws by Alexa Mustafaj.
  • The Panthers extended their lead throughout the stanza and opened up a 15 point advantage (21-6) after a Mustafaj jump shot as the first quarter buzzer sounded. 
  • At the 6:01 mark in the second stanza, Reagan McDonald hit a three pointer to give the hosts a 29-8 lead. 
  • With just under a minute remaining in the half, Gabby Stuart canned a jump shot to send the Panthers into the locker room with a 35-13 point lead.
  • Middlebury's defense continued to press, as they held the Dutchwomen to just seven points in the quarter. 
  • Middlebury began the third quarter on a 9-0 run, capped by a layup from Mustafaj, taking its largest lead of the game (44-13).
  • Union was able to chip into the deficit, ending the third quarter by tallying seven unanswered points to head into the final stanza trailing 44-20. 
  • The fourth session was a defensive standoff, but the Panthers were able to control the remainder of the game and cruise to the 49-28 win.
NOTES
  • Middlebury earned its 20th victory over Union.
  • With 22 points tonight, Mustafaj has tallied double figure points in 28 of her 30 career games.
  • McDonald has made at least one three-point field goal in 18 of her last 22 games.
