Middlebury Utilizes Big Second Quarter To Ease Past Castleton

The Middlebury women's basketball team outscored in-state foe Castleton 21-5 in the second quarter on its way to a 73-51 victory over the Spartans.  
 
HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Panthers raced out to a 12-4 lead on a three-point field goal by Alexa Mustafaj with 6:40 left in the opening quarter.
  • Castleton responded with a 15-2 run of its own spanning 5:25, grabbing a 19-14 lead following a layup from Emily Adams.
  • Middlebury's Gianna Palli tallied the quarter's final five points on a three and a pair of free throws to draw the hosts even at 19-19 after 10 minutes of play.
  • The Panthers started the second quarter with a 17-3 run, fueled by 11 points from Mustafaj, for a 36-22 lead with 3:28 showing before halftime before taking a 40-24 lead into the break.
  • Middlebury slowly increased its lead in the third quarter, taking a 60-35 advantage on a three from Palli with 35 seconds left in the frame.
  • The Panthers maintained a sizeable lead in the final quarter, grabbing their largest lead of 30 (70-40) on a pair of free throws by Katie Hollensteiner en route to the 73-51 victory.
NOTES
  • Mustafaj led all players with 28 points, including 24 in the first half on 10-13 shooting with four threes in the first 20 minutes.
  • She has recorded double-figure point totals in 21 of the last 22 games.
  • Palli finished with a solid all-around stat sheet of eight points and a season-best nine rebounds to go along with four assists.
  • The Middlebury defense limited Castleton to just 2-15 shooting in the second quarter during its decisive run.
