Third Quarter Surge Helps Middlebury Breeze Past Widener 66-39

The Middlebury women's basketball team breezed past Widener 66-39 on Friday night. With the win, Middlebury will take on Marymount in the championship game of the Pablo Cato Tournament. It will be the first meeting between the two teams.
 
HIGHLIGHTS
  • The first quarter was a tightly-contested affair, with neither team building more than a two-point advantage. 
  • The score remained close during the entire quarter, before a last-minute jumper by Mia Robbins gave Widener a 14-12 edge after one quarter.
  • With the Pride leading 21-18 early in the second frame, Gianna Palli scored Middlebury's next five points to give the Panthers their first lead of the game (23-22). Trailing 25-23 with 4:29 left on the clock, the Panthers locked down on defense and rattled off 12-unanswered points. Alexa Mustafaj and Augusta Dixon began the spurt with back-to-back layups, and a Mustafaj three with just 28 seconds remaining saw the Panthers take a 35-25 advantage heading into the locker room. 
  • Middlebury went on its decisive 17-0 run during the third quarter, sparked by a jumper from Mustafaj. Emily Downer also recorded six points in that stretch to extend the lead to 54-29. 
  • The Panthers continued extending their advantage in the final frame as they cruised to the 66-39 victory. 
NOTES
  • First-years Amanda Hill, Calie Messina and Kale Tornwini all earned their first collegiate minutes in the victory.
  • The Middlebury defense held the Pride to just five points in the third quarter.
