Women’s Basketball Falls to Knights in Season Opener

The Middlebury women's basketball team was defeated by Mount Saint Mary (N.Y) in its home opener by a score of 68-61. The game was a back-and-forth affair, and Middlebury trailed by just two entering the fourth quarter, but the Knights were able to pull away and outlast the Panthers down the stretch.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Both teams continued to exchange baskets throughout the remainder of the first stanza, with the Knights taking a 21-20 edge into the break.
  • Mount Saint Mary opened the second quarter with a three from Erin Smith to pull ahead by four.
  • Mustafaj then scored 13 of the Panthers' next 15 points, including three shots from behind the arc to build a 35-30 lead.
  • The Knights countered with an 11-2,, before a Katie Smith jumper with 1:20 remaining gave them a 41-37 edge heading into intermission.
  • Knotted 43-43 early in the third, Emily Downer recorded back-to-back layups to put the Panthers in front.
  • Mount Saint Mary ended the third quarter strong, tallying an 8-2 run, highlighted by two layups by Kaeli McAnally to take a slim 51-49 lead into the final quarter.
  • The Knights continued their hot shooting in the final frame, with a 9-3 run, which gave Mount Saint Mary a 60-52 advantage.
  • With 3:33 remaining, Gianna Palli brought the crowd to its feet with a three that cut the deficit to five (62-57).
