Volleyball Takes One of Two in Weekend Tri-Match

The Middlebury volleyball was edged by Bowdoin, 3-1, in its opening match on Saturday, but bounced back in the evening, cruising to a 3-0 victory of St. Lawrence.
 
HIGHLIGHTS VS BOWDOIN
  • Middlebury jumped out to an early 5-1 lead in the first set, highlighted by two Gabbie O'Toole service aces. 
  • Bowdoin countered with a 7-0 run to take an 8-5 edge.
  • The two sides exchanged points throughout the middle of the set, until Bowdoin strung together eight unanswered points, taking a  21-13 advantage. 
  • The Polar Bears did not look back, eventually winning the first set 25-19.
  • Bowdoin maintained its strong form in the second stanza and rushed out to a commanding 9-1 lead. 
  • The Panthers put together a 4-1 spurt to cut the deficit to five (10-5), but it was not enough as Bowdoin raced away with the set by a score of 25-9.
  • The third frame was a back-and-forth affair. Trailing 10-7, Middlebury scored four unanswered points, highlighted by kills from Lexi Linafelter and O'Toole, and a Reya Alliman service ace.
  • With the score knotted at 17-17, Bowdoin put together a 5-0 burst. 
  • Middlebury countered with a 7-3 run of their own, which included kills from Lucy Ambach, Katie Kraczkowsky, and Linafelter, leveling the score at 23-23.
  • From there, Middlebury took three of the final four points to edge Bowdoin 26-24.
  • The fourth stanza began with the Panthers in front 3-1. 
  • The Polar Bears followed with six-straight points, capped by a kill from Jaida Hodge-Adams to make it 7-3. 
  • The two squads battled back and forth during the middle of the stanza, but Bowdoin later rattled off 13 of 16 points to close out the match 25-13.
HIGHLIGHTS VS ST. LAWRENCE
  • Middlebury came out on fire in the first set, putting together a 10-2 run, which was highlighted by multiple kills from Kraczkowsky, Linafelter, and Ambach.
  • The Panthers did not take their foot off the gas, and pushed their lead to 22-6. 
  • The Saints were able to get one back, but back-to-back kills from Laney Sullivan secured the 25-7 first set triumph. 
  • St. Lawrence began the second stanza by taking a 2-0 edge, but Middlebury rattled off 10 straight points, which included four kills from Ava Tuccio for the 10-2 lead.
  • Ahead 14-7, the Panthers won seven of the next nine points, highlighted by three-straight Kraczkowsky service aces. 
  • The Saints did not back down, putting together a 7-1 run of their own, which included two service aces a piece for Berit Brecke and Lily Snide.
  • Middlebury was able to win three of the next four points to close out the second set 25-17.  
  • The Panthers dominance continued into the third set. The squads exchanged points to open the stanza, but Middlebury took control midway through, scoring 10 unanswered points, bringing the score to 15-4.
  • From there, the Panthers did not look back, and a balanced offensive performance helped finish the match, and win the third set 25-9.
NOTES 
  • The Panthers' opening loss against Bowdoin snapped their 14-match home unbeaten streak that dated back to 2019.
  • Middlebury's hitting percentage (.394) against St. Lawrence was the highest the team has achieved this season.
  • The Panthers recorded 10 service aces against the Saints. This is the fourth time this year that the team has had 10 or more in a match.
  • Ava Tuccio's nine kills against St. Lawrence was a career high.
