Volleyball Wins One of Two, Finishes New England Challenge 2-1

The Middlebury volleyball team fell to #19 MIT in its opening match on Saturday, but rallied to defeat Springfield 3-0, to finish the tournament strong. The Panthers went 2-1 at the New England Challenge, upsetting #23 Babson 3-1 on Friday.
 
HIGHLIGHTS VS. MIT
  • Trailing 5-4, MIT strung together a 6-0 run, including a trio of service aces by Alyssa Unell to take a 10-5 lead.
  • Middlebury continued to battle throughout the first set, as kills from Katie Kraczkowsky and Lucy Ambach cut the Engineers advantage to five (17-12). 
  • MIT was able to outlast the Panthers, claiming the first set 25-16.
  • Leading13-10, the Engineers tallied three unanswered points, extending the lead to 16-10.
  • Middlebury countered by scoring six of the next eight points, highlighted by two kills from Lillian Caldwell, cutting the deficit to just two (18-16).
  • MIT rattled off seven of the next eight points to win the second set 25-17.
  • Middlebury rushed out to an early 12-5 lead in the third frame, with Manya Kula capping the run with a service ace. 
  • The Engineers slowly chipped into the Middlebury lead, cutting it to one (18-17). The span was highlighted by three kills from Ali Gibbs.
  • The teams traded points in a tightly contested end to the third stanza, but Kraczkowsky tallied a service ace to give Middlebury the 26-24 victory.
  • In the fourth set, MIT jumped out to a commanding 18-9 advantage and never looked back.
  • From there, the Engineers would close out the set, 25-16, and win the match, three sets to one. 
HIGHLIGHTS VS. SPRINGFIELD
  • Middlebury opened the first set on a 6-1 run, capped by a Britt Lange service ace.
  • The two squads traded points during the middle of the set, before the Panthers strung together another 6-1 burst to increase their lead to 17-10.
  • Springfield countered by scoring 10 of the next 12 points, including multiple kills from Natalie Billet, taking a 20-19 edge.
  • The teams traded points, before Middlebury rattled off the final three points. The span was highlighted by a winning kill from Kraczkowsky for the 25-23 triumph. 
  • The second stanza was a back-and-forth affair.
  • Leading 11-10, Middlebury rattled off six of the next eight points, which included two kills apiece from Caldwell and Kraczkowsky, to settle into a 17-12 advantage.
  • From there, the Panthers pulled away, winning eight more points. Gabbie O'Toole began and ended the run with a kill, and Middlebury took the second set, 25-16.
  • Middlebury continued to apply the pressure in the third set, jumping out to a 7-2 advantage. 
  • Later in the set, Middlebury put together a 6-0 run, highlighted by a Kelly Ferrero service ace for the 19-12 lead.
  • Springfield battled back, but the Panthers were able to close out the match, 25-17, on the back of two-straight Laney Sullivan kills. 
NOTES
  • O'Toole continues her streak of recording at least 20 assists in each match she has played, as she contributed over 30 helpers in both matches on Saturday.
  • With the victory, Middlebury has won the last five meetings with Springfield.
  • Middlebury finished second overall at the New England Challenge, with Ambach and Kraczkowsky both making the all-tournament team.
