The second-ranked Middlebury field hockey team scored twice in both the first and third quarters, cruising to a 4-0 victory over #6 Tufts. Panther goalie
Grace Harlan tallied one save to record her 19th career shutout, moving into second place in the program's career record books.
HIGHLIGHTS
- Middlebury struck just 1:10 into the first quarter. Amy Griffin drove down the middle of the field, sending a pass toward Caroline Segal. Griffin's pass was deflected up into the air, but Segal batted the ball over the shoulder of Jumbo goalie Sam Gibby for the 1-0 edge.
- The Panthers doubled their lead 7:59 later when Hanna Medwar tapped in a pass from Katie George on the doorstep.
- Middlebury nearly scored again in the final moments of the second quarter, but Gibby dove to her left and denied a bid by George to keep it a two-goal Panther advantage at the halftime break.
- Segal pushed the lead to 3-0 with 4:49 elapsed in the third quarter. A pair of Panther attempts were denied by Gibby, but Segal tapped in a loose ball on the left post.
- With 8:11 expired in the quarter, Audrey Lazar drove down the right side for Middlebury, ripping a shot past Gibby and tucking the ball inside the left post for the 4-0 lead headed to the fourth stanza.
- The Jumbos turned up the offensive pressure in the final quarter, earning their first penalty corner of the game with 6:56 left in the contest.
- Tufts had its lone chance to score with 4:26 left in the game. Harlan kicked away Schuyler Edie's shot from the left to preserve the shutout.
NOTES
- Griffin's assist in the first quarter gives her at least one point in 10-straight games.
- With the victory, the Panthers moved into first in the NESCAC standings with one regular-season game left to play on Tuesday against Williams.
- Middlebury improved to 24-9 against Tufts in the all-time series, winning the last four contests and eight of the last nine.
