Field Hockey Finishes Regular Season with Victory over Williams

The #2 Middlebury field hockey team jumped out to an early lead, and did not look back, defeating Williams 4-1. With the victory, the Panthers claim the top seed in the upcoming NESCAC Tournament, which will begin on Saturday.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • Middlebury opened the scoring after only 5:01. Following a penalty corner, Charlotte Marks fired the ball into the circle, and Lilly Branka redirected it past Carson Stephenson for the 1-0 edge.
  • Williams had an opportunity to equalize at the 7:53 mark. Emily Batchelor had a shot from the left side, but Grace Harlan denied it with a pad save.
  • The Panthers doubled their advantage with 22:03 expired. Marks blasted a low drive that was deflected in front of the cage. Katie George played the ball to Caroline Segal who scrambled it over the line, making it 2-0.
  • Middlebury tacked on a third goal with just under five minutes remaining in the half. Sadie LeStage inserted a penalty corner which Amy Griffin controlled and fired on frame. Stephenson made the initial save, but the rebound ricocheted to Audrey Lazar who slotted it into the lower left corner.
  • With under a minute remaining in the half, George nearly added another goal. The forward went on a 60 yard run, evading multiple Williams defenders, but her effort was thwarted by Stephenson.
  • The Ephs robbed Middlebury of a shutout at the 36:55 mark. Shea van den Broek flipped a ball through the defensive zone, and Batchelor was alert at the back post to tap the pass home to make it 3-1
  • The Panthers restored their three goal advantage with just less than five minutes later. Lazar dribbled through a crowd of Ephs defenders, before driving an effort past the goalie and into the bottom left corner.
NOTES
  • Middlebury will host a NESCAC quarterfinal for the 15th consecutive season, after finishing first in the conference standings.
