Top-Ranked Field Hockey Cruises Past Castleton

Nine different players scored for Middlebury as the top-ranked Panthers picked up an 11-1 win over Castleton (1-2) on Kohn Field. Middlebury held a 10-0 halftime lead and finished the contest with a 42-1 shots advantage as Erin Nicholas surpassed the 100-career point mark. The Panthers open NESCAC play on Saturday with an 11:00 a.m. game vs. Wesleyan, while the Spartans visit Framingham on the same day.

Amy Griffin started things off at the 4:42 mark with a blast to the top left corner of the cage. Meg Fearey finished a scramble in front at 10:07, before Nicholas scored with a reverse-stick shot just over two minutes later. Caroline Segal made it a 4-0 game with 2:13 remaining in the first quarter.

Katie George kept the momentum going in the second quarter with a great individual rush down the middle resulting in a goal. Grace Murphy finished a nice feed from Nicholas at the 19:18 mark, followed by a goal from Nicholas for the 7-0 advantage. Lily Branka scored with an assist from Audrey Lazar, before Lazar struck for a goal of her own to make it a 9-0 contest. Lazar figured in her third-straight goal when she found Sadie Lestage, for a 10-0 halftime lead.

Lazar picked up where she left off in the first half, converting a penalty corner 2:28 into the third quarter with assists from Selin Everett and Lestage.

Castleton got on the board 5:09 into the second session with a similar goal, as Emily Harris found the back of the cage with an insert from Kaitlin Bardellini and a stop by Madelyn Cote.

That would be the game's final goal as the Panthers picked up the convincing 11-1 win.

Lazar led all scorers with two goals and three assists, while Nicholas scored twice and an assist. Grace Harlan and KK Newton each played 30 minutes in net for the hosts. Maddi Leduc made five stops for Castleton in 37 minutes, while Hannah Frittenburg earned 13 saves in 23 minutes of play.
