The Middlebury volleyball team picked up a three-set sweep of Brandeis on Saturday, extending its winning streak to 10 games. The Panthers current streak is the program's longest since 2010. Middlebury (10-0) returns to NESCAC play on Friday, hosting Trinity at 7:00 p.m., while the Judges (4-9) are home against St. Joseph's (Maine) on Tuesday.
In the opening set, the teams were tied 6-6, before the hosts went on a nice 14-3 run for a commanding 20-9 cushion. The Panthers didn't allow the Judges to get any closer than eight points as
Maggie Wise sealed the opening win (25-14) with a service ace.
Middlebury used another run in the middle frame to gain some distance on Brandeis. Tied 10-10, the Panthers used a modest 7-0 burst with
Jane Nelson serving to gain some separation. The hosts led by as many as 10, finishing off the 25-15 triumph on a block from the tandem of Nelson and
Gabbie O'Toole.
The third set was tied four times early on, but Middlebury slowly pulled away. The team's biggest lead came at 21-10 on an ace by
Kelly Ferrero, while final point of the set came on a service miscue for a 25-13 score.
Wise led a balanced Panther attack with 10 kills and
Lucy Ambach added eight. O'Toole dished out 27 assists, while Wise (16), Ferrero (12) and
Laney Sullivan (11) each reached double figures in digs.
Ines Grom-Manscencal, Kaisa Newberg and Stephanie Borr each have five kills for the Judges, while Grom-Manscencal added 17 assists. Kaitlyn Oh led all players with 17 digs and Lara Verstosek chipped in with 13.
Earlier in the day, Amherst defeated Brandeis in three sets, by the scores of 25-14, 25-19, 25-14.
