The Middlebury men's soccer team scored the game's lone goal in the middle of the second half, as the Panthers (4-0, 2-0) earned a 1-0 NESCAC triumph over 11th-ranked Bowdoin on Saturday on the South Street Field. Middlebury hits the road on Tuesday for a 7:00 p.m. start at Framingham State, while the Polar Bears are in action Monday at Maine Maritime Academy at 8:00 p.m.
The best chances for both teams in the opening frame came minutes apart. With 33:50 showing on the clock, Bowdoin's Ben Brown curled a free kick on net that Panther keeper
Ryan Grady punched away. Just over two minutes later, Middlebury's
Liam Sloan had a restart after a foul from 25-yards out, but Polar Bear goalie Michal Webber dove to his right and snared the attempt.
Middlebury had a good scoring opportunity just under 10 minutes into the second frame, when
Brandon Reid set up
Brendan Barry for a shot from close range that Webber smothered.
The Panthers netted the lone tally of the game, as
Jordan Saint-Louis collected a loose ball, beat a defender while cutting to the middle of the field. Once he gained shooting space, Saint-Louis tucked a shot from the top of the restraining area into the right side of the net with 19:10 on the clock. This was the first goal Bowdoin had allowed this season.
The Polar Bears pressed for the equalizer, with their best chance coming on a scramble inside the Middlebury penalty area. Dylan Reid was able to get a shot off, but it sailed over the net to keep the final score at 1-0.
Grady finished with three saves for his second shutout of the season, while Webber recorded six stops for Bowdoin.
Middlebury held an 11-7 advantage in shots, while the Polar Bears took two of the game's three corner kicks.
