Inside Game Carries Men’s Basketball Past SUNY Canton

Middlebury's Alex Sobel and David Brennan each recorded double-doubles, as the Panthers posted a 79-60 over visiting SUNY Canton (1-2) on Tuesday. Middlebury (5-2) heads to Albertus Magnus on Thursday at 7:00 p.m. for its next contest, while the Kangaroos are home on Friday against SUNY Poly at 5:30 p.m.

The game was tight through the opening minutes of the contest, with the Roos taking an 11-8 edge on back-to-back three-pointers by Brandon Everitt with just over 14 minutes showing on the clock. The hosts responded with a 9-0 run, as Sobel sandwiched a pair of field goals around a trey from Jaden Bobbett and a Thomas Zodda bucket in the paint for a 17-11 cushion.

The Panthers later used a modest 7-0 burst to claim a double-digit advantage at 24-14 on a shot from behind the three-point arc by Charley Moore. Canton used the long ball to make a push with Justin Omega and DeMerrill each connecting, closing the difference to four points (30-26) with 3:10 remaining. Middlebury finished strong with Sam Stevens netting consecutive baskets from the floor, while Noah Osher drained a three-pointer at the buzzer for a 37-26 cushion heading into the break.

The Panthers maintained a double-digit lead throughout the second stanza, claiming a 48-30 advantage on a conventional three-point play by Brennan from in the paint. Sobel later gave Middlebury its biggest lead (61-42) of the game with 11:10 on the clock, sinking a shot from in the lane and hitting the ensuing free throw after being fouled.

Canton closed to within 71-60 with just under five minutes remaining on a triple by Danny Santana, but the Panthers netted the final eight points of the contest, matching their biggest lead at the final horn (79-60).

Sobel led all players with 19 points and 10 rebounds for his fourth double-double of the season, while Brennan boasted 12 points and 11 boards, marking the third time he has reached double digits in both categories. Osher had 16 points and nine rebounds, with Bobbett scoring nine points and a game-high eight assists.
