The Middlebury men's basketball team secured an 83-81 win over Albertus Magnus (2-1) on the road Thursday night. With the victory, the Panthers recorded their fourth-straight triumph, improving to 6-2 on the season. Middlebury returns to the court on Saturday afternoon for a 4:00 p.m. matchup at New England College.
Trialing 2-0, the Falcons scored eight unanswered points to take an 8-2 lead at the 17:18 mark. Middlebury responded, cutting the deficit to one (8-7) on a charity toss from
Sam Stevens with just under five minutes elapsed. The teams went back-and-forth, with neither able to pull away. A layup from
David Brennan knotted the game 19-19 with 8:46 remaining in the half, before Middlebury took its largest lead of the stanza (35-28) on a layup from Stevens. Abertus Magnus battled back, with Davon Warner hitting a three-pointer with just six seconds to go, sending the teams into the break tied at 39 points apiece.
The Panthers went on a 12-4 run to start the second half to take a 51-43 advantage four minutes in. Stevens and
Alex Sobel scored all 12 points in the early run with Stevens knocking down a pair of threes. Middlebury controlled play for nearly all of the final frame, growing its lead to as many as 11 points (71-60) on a layup from
Jackson Pitcher with 3:45 remaining. The Falcons went on a 14-5 run, cutting the deficit to one (75-74) with 52 seconds to go.
Noah Osher gave Middlebury some breathing room, sinking a jump shot with 28 seconds left for the 77-74 edge. The Panthers were solid down the stretch, going 6-6 from the charity stripe for the 83-81 win.
Stevens led all scorers, tallying a game-high 27 points during the victory. Sobel recorded his fifth double-double of the season, scoring 15 points and grabbing 13 rebounds. He also had a game-high five blocks during the contest, totaling 100 in his career, while Osher chipped in with 12 points.
Terry Dawkins paced the Falcons with 13 points, while Tyreek Perkins tallied 12 points to go along with nine rebounds.
