The Middlebury men's soccer team was edged 2-1 by Colby on Saturday afternoon in Maine. The Panthers head to Keene State on Tuesday for a 7:00 p.m. kickoff.
Middlebury had a good look to get on the scoreboard at the 12:27 mark.
Liam Sloan broke away from several Mule defenders, before sending a through ball to
Jordan Saint-Louis, but a Colby defender just got a foot on the ball to deny the one-timer opportunity.
The Panthers made it 1-0 with 27:13 expired after an initial shot by Saint-Louis was blocked by a pair of Mules at the top of the 18.
Shane Farrell one-timed the rebound from 25 yards out into the bottom right corner of the goal for the one-goal edge.
Middlebury threatened to score again with 15 seconds remaining in the half.
Eujin Chae sent a corner from the left flag into the box, but
Aiden Pape's one-time header was blocked and cleared away.
Colby knotted the game 1-1 at the 61:17 mark. Ethan Franco served a pass from the left side that sent Middlebury goalie
Ryan Grady and Mule Mario Simoes into the air, but Simoes just got a head on it, sending the ball over Grady for the equalizer.
The Mules scored the game-winner on a set piece after a free kick just inside the 18. Paul Hawkins touched the ball in motion before Franco rifled a shot into the upper left 90 at the 78:30 mark. The Panthers were unable to the tie game in the final 22:30 of play, as Colby hung on for the 2-1 win.
Grady made four saves in goal for Middlebury, while Jared McNair earned the win with seven stops for the Mules. Colby held an edge in shots (13-11) and corner kicks (7-5).
