Men's Lacrosse Cruises Past Connecticut College In Home Opener

Middlebury produced a 20-goal outburst in its home opener, defeating Connecticut College (1-1, 0-1) by a score of 20-8 on Youngman Field at Alumni Stadium. The Panthers (2-0, 2-0) return to action on Tuesday when they host Plattsburgh State  at 4:00 p.m., while the Camels entertain Hamilton next Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. faceoff.

Middlebury scored the game's first three goals before a man-up goal tally Gus Mazzocca put Conn. College on the board at the 4:07 mark. Will Brossman converted a pass from A.J. Kucinski with one second remaining in the first quarter for a 4-1 Panther lead after 15 minutes of play.

The Camels scored first in the second quarter, before Middlebury tallied five of the next six goals for a 9-3 lead. Danny Jacobs scored the first marker from close range, before Michael McCormack fired a hard left-handed shot into the back of the net. Conn. College tallied the final goal of the half for a 9-4 Middlebury advantage at the break.

Leading 11-6 in the third quarter, the hosts scored five-straight goals, three coming in a 1:14 span, extending the lead to 16-6. Jack Hoelzer got things going, before Brossman converted a feed from behind the net by Kucinski. The third tally of the run came from Kucinski, who scored a quick-stick goal after a feed from Alderik van der Heyde. McCormick earned another impressive goal with 25 seconds remaining in the quarter, while Hoelzer closed the spurt with a marker after a nice pump fake.

The Middlebury run continued in the fourth stanza as Jack Sheehan and McCormack scored to put the Panthers up, 18-6. The teams each scored twice more in the contest for the 20-8 final.

McCormack led Middlebury with four goals, Tyler Forbes scored three, while Kucinski had two goals, two assists and picked up five ground balls. Brossman, Hoelzer and William Ryan each scored twice, while Chase Goree and van der Heyde dished out two assists a piece. Andrew Ng earned a game-high five caused turnovers to go along with five ground balls, while Madnick picked up eight ground balls to surpass the 300-ground ball plateau. He now owns 306-career rollers, moving him into third place all-time at Middlebury. Tyler Bass made 11 saves in 52 minutes to earn the win, while Finn O'Connor had one stop in eight minutes of action.

Jack Rutter led Conn. College with four goals, while Mazzocca scored twice. Toby Almeida picked up eight grounds balls, while Winston Palmeri had five and Courtney Morgan caused three turnovers. Colin Smith made 13 saves in 48:34, while Billy Dreyer earned three stops in 11:26.

The Panther defense forced 24 Camel turnovers in the game, as the hosts held a 53-41 shots advantage.
