The Middlebury ski team sits in third place after one day at the University of Vermont Carnival. Vermont leads with 447 points, followed closely by Dartmouth (443) and the Panthers (432). Erik Arvidsson picked up his third-career win on the alpine side, highlighting the first day of racing. Action resumes on Saturday with the women's 5K skate, the men's 10K skate and the slalom races. Nordic races are being held at the Craftsbury Outdoor Center, while the alpine racers are at the Stowe Mountain Resort.

In nordic sprint action, Alexandra Lawson, Maddie Morgan and Annika Landis all qualified into the six quarterfinal heats. The trio continued to advance as all three moved into the semifinal round as well. At the end of the day, Morgan (2nd), Lawson (3rd) and Landis (4th) led the women to the overall team title.

On the men's side, Peter Wolter also qualified for the quarterfinal round, before advancing into the semifinals. He paced the squad in second place, while Josh Valentine was 17th overall, followed by Samuel Hodges, who placed 23rd.

The Middlebury men's alpine team earned another victory on Friday, as the Panthers captured the giant slalom. Arvidsson led after the first run and made his time stand up during his second trip down the mountain, picking up the win with a time of 2:12.62. Three spots back in fourth place was his teammate Justin Alkier, who earned a two-run time of 2:13.06. Also cracking the top-10 was Tim Gavett, whose time of 2:14.54 was good for the 10th spot.

Nina Reichhelm paced the Middlebury women with a top-10 finish, crossing the line with a two-run time of 2:19.75, good for eighth place. Emma Hall and Madison Lord were next for the Panthers, finishing the event in 18th (2:21.43) and 19th places (2:21.75), respectively.
