Box Score Middlebury scored in six different innings, including six runs in the sixth, and pounded out a season-high 18 hits en route to knocking off Division I Dartmouth (11-19) Tuesday 15-7 at Biondi Park. The victory marked the first win for the Panthers over the Big Green since the 1950 season. Middlebury (16-8) returns to action Wednesday when it hosts Plattsburgh State at Forbes Field beginning at 3:30 p.m.
The visitors opened the scoring with three runs during a two-out rally in the top of the first inning. Andrew Hennings drew a walk and moved to second on a single through the left side by Sam Graf. Both came around to score on a three-run home run to left field by Gray Goolsby for his initial career round-tripper.
The hosts tallied a single run in the bottom of the frame when Nate Ostmo reached on a fielder's choice and scored on a Panther miscue in the outfield. The Big Green knotted the contest one inning later on a two-run single through the right side by Sean Sullivan.
The Panthers took the lead again in the third with two runs on just one hit. Sam Graf was hit by a pitch, moved to second on a walk and stole third, eventually scoring on a wild pitch. Goolsby walked and later touched home on an infield single from Alec Ritch for a 5-3 edge.
After Dartmouth tallied once in the bottom of the inning, Middlebury added two runs when Andrew Gough tripled to right center and scored on a single to left from Justin Han. Han later touched home on a sacrifice fly to center from Graf.
In the fifth, the Panthers increased their lead to 8-4 when Ritch singled and scored on a double to right center from Hayden Smith. Dartmouth pulled to within one behind three runs in the home half of the frame on a sacrifice fly by Sullivan and a two-run single from Matt Feinstein.
Middlebury broke the game wide open in the sixth with six runs on five hits, highlighted by a bases-clearing triple to right center from Han, for a 14-7 lead. Graf and Phil Bernstein also had RBI singles in the frame, while Smith drove in a run on a sacrifice fly.
The Panthers added a run in the eighth when Ritch walked, stole second and third and raced home on a sacrifice fly from Smith for the final 15-7 score.
Han went 4-6 with four RBI, a triple and a run scored for the Panthers, while Graf, Bernstein, Ritch and Gough each had multi-hit games. Gough also added a triple, while Goolsby ripped a homer. Goolsby and Smith each had three RBI, Graf and Ritch both scored three runs, while Ritch swiped four bases. Colby Morris started the contest and pitched one inning with a strikeout, becoming the all-time leader in appearances with 43, surpassing Scooter Scott '11 who had 42. Evan Stewart (1-0) earned his first career win, pitching 1.2 innings while allowing just one hit. Bobby Sullivan tossed a scoreless inning, while George Goldstein hurled the final two with no runs or hits and struck out three.
At the plate for the Big Green, Logan Adams was 2-4 with an RBI and two runs scored, while Steffen Torgersen went 1-3 with a triple, two walks, RBI and scored three times. Sullivan drove in three runs and walked twice. Dartmouth utilized seven pitchers with Alec Vaules (1-2) taking the loss, giving up four runs on four hits over the first 2.1 innings.
