Box Score Middlebury scored five of its six runs in the first three innings, on its way to a 6-4 win over Thomas (1-11) on Tuesday afternoon. The Panthers (7-4) return to action on Wednesday with a 1:00 p.m. game against Union.
Middlebury went ahead in the top of the first when Brooks Carroll scored an unearned run on an RBI groundout from Jake Dianno. The Terriers tied the game in the bottom of the frame before an RBI single from Andrew Gough gave the Panthers a 2-1 lead after two innings.
Middlebury scored three in the third to go on top 5-1. Dianno singled to right, stole second and scored on a double to left by Kevin Woodring. A sacrifice fly from Jack Stolper drive in the next run, while Justin Han came in the back door on a double play later in the inning.
Thomas scored a run in the fifth and added a pair the seventh to make it a 5-4 game.
The Panthers added an insurance run in the eighth inning, when Gray Goolsby scored on a sacrifice fly from Henry Strmecki.
Sam Grace (1-0) earned the win, allowing two runs on two hits with eight strikeouts over five innings of work. Andrew Martinson pitched a scoreless eighth, as did Colby Morris in the ninth to earn the save. Six different Panthers had hits in the game, including a double by Woodring and three steals by Brooks Carroll.
Dylan Copeland (0-2) suffered the loss, giving up five runs (three earned) on five hits over six innings with five strikeouts. Alexander Miller finished the game 3-5 with a double and two runs scored.
