Baseball Takes Two From Lawrence

Middlebury opened up its spring break with a two-game sweep over Lawrence (3-8) in Florida on Saturday. The Panthers (5-2) took game one 9-2, before a 10-0 shutout victory in the second contest. Middlebury is back in action on Sunday with a pair of games against Elmhurst.

Trailing 1-0 in game one, Alan Guild drove in Andrew Hennings, who had doubled, to tie the game at 1-1.

After Lawrence went back on top 2-1 in the third, Middlebury struck for three in the bottom of the inning. Justin Han walked and was later driven in on a sacrifice fly to right by Hennings. Henry Strmecki followed, belting a two-run homer to center.

The Panthers added to their lead the following inning with three more runs for a 7-2 advantage. Gray Goolsby led off with a single to center before scoring on a triple to left by Han. Han crossed the plate when he and Hayden Smith executed a successful double steal. Hennings then plated Smith with a base hit to left field.

Middlebury added a pair of unearned runs in the sixth for the 9-2 final.

Colby Morris improved to 2-0 on the season with a complete-game win, allowing two runs and five hits over seven innings with five strikeouts.

Hennings was 2-2 with a double and two RBI in the game, while Ryan Hanrahan finished 2-4 in the contest.

Clayton Agler (0-3) suffered the loss, allowing seven runs on seven hits over 3.1 innings of work. Four different players singled for Lawrence, with a solo homer from Patrick McDonnell.

In game two, Michael Farinelli tossed six innings of two-hit baseball, striking out  nine and walking none to earn the 10-0 victory. The Panthers pounded out 14 hits in the game, scoring during innings 3-7.

Leading 1-0 in the fourth, Hennings walked and scored on an RBI single to left by Strmecki. Kevin Woodring also singled to left, plating Strmecki for the 3-0 advantage.

A two-run triple by Strmecki in the fifth and a sacrifice fly from Woodring put the Panthers up, 6-0.

Jake Dianno drive in Phil Bernstein with a sacrifice fly in the sixth, before Brooks Carroll tripled to right to score Andrew Gough.

Middlebury added two more runs in the seventh for the 10-0 final. Sam Graf tripled to center to plate Freddy Mosier, while Bernstein drove in Graf with a sacrifice fly.

Strmecki finished the game 3-4 with two triples, two runs scored and three RBI. His two triples in a game tie a school record, with it last occurring in 2011. Graf and Carroll were each 2-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Gough finished the contest 2-3, scoring twice.

Brad Olson suffered the loss, allowing two runs and four hits over three innings of work. Three Vikings had singles at the plate.
