Panthers Fall In Series Finale At Emory

Middlebury saw its modest three-game winning streak come to an end, as the Panthers closed out its series at Emory with an 8-2 setback on Sunday. The visitors started their three contests in Atlanta with a doubleheader sweep the previous day. Middlebury (3-2) opens its spring trip on Saturday, playing a doubleheader with Lawrence in Florida at 12:00 p.m.

Emory (7-8) secured an early lead, plating three runs in the bottom of the opening inning. Jack Rubenstein drove in the first run with a base hit, while Jacob Greene made it 2-0 with a walk with the bases loaded. The final run of the frame came on a ground out by Richard Brereton.

In the top of the fourth, the Panthers had a chance to cut into the deficit, getting the bases loaded with two outs. Alec Ritch grounded a ball up the middle, but Eagle shortstop Ryan Adelman made a diving play for a fielder's choice to end the threat.

The hosts tacked on four runs in the bottom of the fourth, increasing the advantage to 7-0. David Shore and Bubby Terp each had RBI singles in the frame.

Middlebury got on the scoreboard in the top of the sixth, as Sam Graf singled home Hayden Smith, who led off the inning with a walk. The Panthers made it a 7-2 contest in their next at bat, as Gray Goolsby opened the stanza with a double and raced home on a passed ball.

Greene got one of the runs back for the hosts in the bottom of seventh, hitting a solo home run to left field for the final 8-2 edge.

Graf and Andrew Hennings each were 2-4 for Middlebury, with Graf also driving in a run. Alex Price (0-1) went three innings in his first collegiate start, allowing three earned runs on four hits. Michael Farinelli had a solid effort out the bullpen, yielding one run in 3.2 innings of work with three strikeouts.           

Eagle starter Jack Moore (1-2) went eight innings to earn the win, allowing just two runs on eight hits. At the plate for Emory, Rubenstein went 2-4 with a RBI, while Greene was 1-3 with a homer and two runs batted in.
