Middlebury Scores 26 Runs In Sweep At Emory

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Middlebury plated 26 runs in a doubleheader sweep at Emory on Saturday, winning the opening game 10-5 and taking the second contest 16-5 in Atlanta. During the team's modest three-game winning streak, the Panthers have scored a combined 38 times. Middlebury (3-1) caps off its three-game series with the Eagles (6-8) on Sunday with a single game at 2:00 p.m.

In the opening contest, Middlebury grabbed an early lead with a pair of runs in the top of the first inning. Justin Han accounted for the first run, racing home on a wild pitch, while Andrew Hennings drove in Alan Guild with a base hit to left center for a 2-0 advantage.

The Eagles cut the margin in half in the bottom half of the frame, but the Panthers got it right back to a two-run difference in the second. Gray Goolsby reached base on a fielder's choice and later scored on another Emory wild pitch.

The hosts closed to within 3-2 in the bottom of the third, with Middlebury getting back on the scoreboard two innings later with a pair runs. Henry Strmecki touched the plate on a single by Hayden Smith, who scored two batters later on a double to left field by Guild.

The teams traded runs in the fifth inning, while Panthers struck for three runs in the top of the eighth inning. Sam Graf drove home Hennings and Guild with a triple to right center and scored on a single through the left side by Alec Ritch. Middlebury added a run in the ninth, as Smith tripled in Han, while Emory's Drew Bartholomew connected on a two-run triple in his team's final at bat for the 10-5 final.

Panther starter Colby Morris (1-0) pitched seven innings for win, allowing three runs on four hits. Smith and Strmecki led Middlebury's 14-hit attack, as they both went 3-5 with Smith driving in a pair of runs and Strmecki scoring twice.

Jackson Grayson went 2-4 for the Eagles, while starting pitcher Michael Leeder (0-1) lasted only 1.2 innings in taking the loss.

Emory scored first in the nightcap, plating two runs in the opening frame on a two-run single by Ryan Adelman. Jacob Greene extended the advantage to 3-0 with a solo home run to right field in the second inning.

Middlebury stormed back, taking the lead with a four-run third inning. Brooks Carroll walked with the bases load and Han scored on a wild pitch, closing the gap to 3-2. Stremcki tied the contest with a sacrifice fly to right field and Carroll put the visitors in front for the first time (4-3), scoring on a throwing error.

The Panthers added to their lead in the fifth inning when Jake Dianno came through with a clutch base-clearing double with two out for a 7-3 edge.

The Eagles got a run back in the last of the fifth inning and nearly had more, but a nice catch by Graf in right field ended the frame with the bases loaded.

In the sixth, Middlebury tacked on five more runs, starting with a RBI single to right by Han. Carroll provided the big hit of the stanza, blasting a three-run homer to left for an 11-4 lead. Two batters later, Strmecki belted a solo shot over the fence in left field to extend the difference to eight runs (12-4).

The Panthers closed out the victory, scoring four more runs in the seventh and the Eagles countered with one in the eighth for the 16-5 final.

Ritch and Smith each finished with three hits, Carroll and Hennings each went 2-2 with Carroll adding four RBI. Bobby Sullivan (1-0) picked up the win with three innings of scoreless relief, allowing just one hit with a pair of strikeouts.

Seven different Emory players recorded hits with Adelman driving in two runs. Bryant Wise (0-1) took the loss on the mound for the Eagles, giving up four runs in the first 2.1 innings.

In the win, Graf singled for the Panthers for his 100th career hit.
