Field Hockey Downs St. John Fisher as DeLorenzo Wins 300th

Box Score

Middlebury outshot St. John Fisher 23-4, emerging with a 2-1 victory over the Cardinals (11-4) on Kohn Field. The win was the 300th at Middlebury for head coach Katharine DeLorenzo, who owns a mark of 300-61 at the school. The top-ranked Panthers (13-0) return to action at #6 Tufts Saturday in a key NESCAC match-up. The Cardinals will visit Elmira on Wednesday.

St. John Fisher came out strong with a pair of shots in the first minute by Bre Socker and Lindsay Scott that were both denied by Middlebury keeper Grace Harlan. Middlebury struck first 6:12 into the game when Kelly Coyle scored from just inside the circle with a sweeping shot from the left side.

The Cardinals tied the game just 1:07 into the second quarter on a penalty corner when Reghan Amoroso tipped in a shot from Alyssa Andres to knot the contest at 1-1. The Panthers answered with some solid passing on a penalty corner at the 18:44 mark, resulting in a 2-1 lead. Alison Denby fed Erin Nicholas who one-touched a crossing pass, before Katie George swept the ball into the left side of the cage for her team-leading ninth tally of the season. Socker had another shot with 4:00 left in the half, but Harlan was equal to the task.

Middlebury dominated the third quarter, outshooting its opponent, 10-0. The Panthers threatened early on in the period with quality chances from Julia Richards and Coyle, but both were denied by Cardinal goalkeeper Kelly Bergamo. Middlebury had another chance on a penalty corner, but a high shot by Marissa Baker was saved. Nicholas nearly put her team up 3-1, but her first shot was stopped before her second attempt hit the post 8:01 into the period.

Things settled in the fourth quarter as the Panthers were not threatened and hung on for the win. Harlan finished with three saves in goal for the Panthers, while Bergamo made 11 stops for the Cardinals.

The victory extends Middlebury's winning streak to 20 games, with 30-straight triumphs on Kohn Field.
