Panthers Edge Williams to Start Second Semester

The 15th-ranked Middlebury women's squash team began its second-semester action at home, edging 13th-ranked Williams by a 6-3 score on Saturday in the Bostwick Family Squash Center. Seven of the nine matches were decided in five games. The Panthers (3-1) return to action on Friday when they play at No. 16 Amherst starting at 3:00 p.m.

In the win against the Ephs (4-5), Natalie Madden gave the hosts a 1-0 advantage with a three-game triumph at No. 6 against Anna Nicholson (11-7, 11-7, 12-10). Williams took a 3-1 lead behind five-game victories in the No. 3, No. 9 and No. 5 spots on the ladder.

The Panthers claimed the remaining matches to earn the team win. Gwen Davis outlasted Alex Pear at No. 8 in five games (11-9, 6-11, 11-7, 7-11, 11-3), Ideal Dowling edged Sarah Willwerth in the second spot (11-8, 11-6, 6-11, 6-11, 11-9), while Emily Beinkampen eased past Kathryn Wright in three games at No. 7 (11-7, 11-2, 11-6).

Virginia Schaus clinched the decisive fifth point for the Panthers via a five-game win in the fourth spot over Melissa Swann (11-9, 11-8, 6-11, 7-11, 13-11), while Beatrijs Kuijpers rounded out the scoring atop the lineup with a five-game triumph against Julia Ward (9-11, 11-5, 11-13, 11-8, 11-8).
