Middlebury Falls at Division I Dartmouth

Box Score

Middlebury closed out the 2018 campaign with a non-conference match-up at NCAA Division I Dartmouth, as the Big Green used a six-run third inning to carry them to a 12-1 victory Wednesday at Bondi Park. The Panthers finished the season at an even 16-16.

Dartmouth (16-20-1) opened the scoring in its first at bat, as Sean Sullivan reached with a lead-off walk and later scored on a wild pitch.

The Panthers threatened in the top of the third, as Ryan Hanrahan and Justin Han each reached on base hits. Big Green pitcher Tyler Flagler got out of the jam, enticing Grant Elgarten to ground out with runners on second and third.

The hosts doubled the lead in their half of the third when Bennett McCaskill led off with a two-base hit to left field and touched home plate on a single by Sullivan to right. The Big Green added five more runs in the inning with the first two coming on a double inside the left-field line by Blake Crossing, before a three-run homer to right by Michael Calamari for a 7-0 advantage.

Middlebury's defense prevented Dartmouth from adding runs in the fourth, as Elgarten made a nice catch up against the left-field fence to end the inning with one runner left on base.

McCaskill added two runs with a base hit to left field in the fifth inning, while the hosts added three more runs in the sixth for a 12-0 lead.

The Panthers got on the scoreboard in the top half of the seventh when Hamilton Evans singled and promptly stole second base. He scored one batter later on a single to right by Jake Turtel, making it a 12-1 contest.

Turtel went 2-4 for the Panthers at the plate, while Jake Dianno ripped a triple into the right-field corner and Gray Goolsby added a double to the gap in left-center field. Will Oppenheim (2-2) took the loss allowing one run in the first inning, while George Goldstein, Jack Miller, John Tipps and Colby Morris each tossed a scoreless inning.

At the plate for the Big Green, Justin Fowler, Matt Feinstein, Steffen Torgensen, McCaskill and Crossings each had a pair of hits, while Calamari drove in three runs on a home run. Dartmouth utilized six pitchers with Fagler (1-1) picked up the hurling, throwing the first three innings.

The contest marked the first time since the 2000 season the Panthers faced a Division I opponent (Vermont) and the game renewed their series with Dartmouth that last saw the teams play in 1999.
