The Middlebury men's tennis team concluded the regular-season portion of its schedule with a 7-2 home triumph on Sunday over No. 8 Amherst (11-5, 4-3). The match took place inside the Nelson Recreational Center due to wet weather. The top-ranked Panthers (18-3, 7-1) close the regular-season slate winners of eight-straight matches, and return to the courts next weekend at the NESCAC Championships hosted by the Mammoths.
During doubles play, the Panthers were victorious in all three matches. The No. 3 duo of Timo van der Geest and Peter Martin got the hosts on the board with an 8-2 win over Oliver Kendall and Jesse Levitin. The hosts doubled their lead when William de Quant and Noah Farrell recorded an 8-2 victory against Kevin Ma and Zach Bessette in the second spot. The No. 1 flight of Lubomir Cuba and Kyle Schlanger battled back and forth with the Amherst pair of Sean Wei and Jayson Fung, winning the last three games during a 9-7 triumph and giving Middlebury a 3-0 advantage.
In singles action, Schlanger claimed the team's fourth point at No. 4 with a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Fung.
The Mammoths tallied their first point of the match with a three-set triumph in the top spot. At No. 3, de Quant clinched the match for the Panthers with a 6-1, 2-6, 6-1 win over Bessette. Farrell increased the Middlebury edge to 6-1 via a 6-3, 7-6 (4) victory against Ma in the second flight.
Amherst claimed its second point of the contest with a straight-set win at No. 6. Nate Eazor completed the scoring with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Jon Heidenberg in the fifth spot for the 7-2 final.
