Box Score Middlebury forced 20 turnovers on its way to an 11-9 win over #7 Amherst Saturday afternoon on Pratt Field. Second-ranked Middlebury (8-1, 5-0) returns to action on Tuesday when it hosts Union at 7:00 p.m.
Trailing 2-0, Emily Barnard and Georgia Carroll tied the game at 2-2 just 5:17 into the contest. Claire Dunbar scored her third of the game for the Mammoths, before Jenna McNicholas tied the game at 3-3 and Casey O'Neill converted a pass from Emma McDonagh with a player advantage for a 4-3 lead. Amherst tied the game, before the Panthers ran off three-straight goals for a 7-4 advantage with 7:20 left in the first half. The hosts scored the final goal of the half and trailed 7-5 at the break.
Hollis Perticone netted her first of the game just 57 seconds into the second half, extending the Panther lead to 8-5. Dunbar answered before Kirsten Murphy put her team up 9-6 less than a minute later. Amherst again responded, this time on a goal with a player advantage by Katherine Malone at the 23:12 mark, making it a 9-7 game. Just 1:19 later, Erin Nicholas found Barnard to extend the lead to three goals (10-7).
Dunbar brought the Mammoths within two before Carroll regained the three-goal advantage (11-8) for the Panthers when she scored after an assist from O'Neill with 13:09 remaining. Amherst netted the game's final goal with 10:27 remaining as the Mammoths could get no closer. The teams ended the second half exchanging all eight goals that were scored.
Carroll, McNicholas and O'Neill each had two goals and an assist for Middlebury, while Barnard scored twice. Perticone won four draw controls, Emma White earned two, while Addy Mitchell forced three turnovers. Julia Keith made seven saves in goal to record the win.
Dunbar led all scorers with five goals and two assists for Amherst. Hannah Fox finished with five draws, Malia Noves earned three, while Sabrina Solow caused three turnovers. Talia Land made 19 stops in the Amherst net.
