Middlebury claimed five of the six points during singles action en route to a 6-3 victory on Thursday at Division I foe UC San Diego. The third-ranked Panthers, winners of five straight, improve to 10-1 and wrap up their spring trip on Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. match at sixth-ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.
The Tritons (8-5) took two of the three doubles points. The hosts grabbed a 1-0 lead with a win at No. 3 by an 8-5 score. The Panther tandem of Lubomir Cuba and Kyle Schlanger leveled the match at 1-1, fighting back from a 5-0 deficit for an 8-6 win in the top spot over Sreeganesh Manoharan and Marc Isaia. UC San Diego regained the lead via an 8-5 triumph at No. 2.
During singles action, Middlebury evened the contest at 2-2 when Cuba posted a 6-1, 6-4 win at No. 1 against Justin Zhang. The Tritons tallied their point with a straight-set victory in the fourth position.
The Panthers rattled off the final four points for the victory. Nate Eazor defeated Eskil Jarlskog by 6-1, 6-4 scores at No. 3, while Schlanger put the Panthers up for good with a 6-3, 6-3 victory against Isaia in the second flight. Andre Xiao clinched the match for the visitors via a 7-5, 6-3 win against Marius Ruh at No. 5, while Alex Vanezis rounded out the scoring with a 4-6, 7-5, 10-6 victory over Richard Han at the bottom of the lineup.
