Comeback Falls Short at Emory

Emory held off a late charge by Middlebury (1-5), as the Eagles (8-9) picked up a 10-7 win on Sunday afternoon in Georgia. The Panthers return to action on Saturday at Chapman (Calif.) on their annual spring break trip.

The Eagles jumped out to a 4-0 lead with four runs on four hits in the first inning. The hosts added a pair in the second, before Middlebury got on the board with two runs of their own in the top of the third. Brooks Carroll walked and stole second, before scoring on a two-run blast to left by Kevin Woodring.

Emory added a run in the bottom half of the third inning, before Carroll scored in the fifth on a single to right by Grant Elgarten, making it a 7-3 game. The Eagles answered quickly in the bottom of the inning, adding three more runs for a 10-3 advantage.

The Panthers got back within reach by plating four runs in the seventh, cutting the deficit to 10-7. Carroll singled to center and later scored when Woodring doubled to left center. Hayden Smith crossed the plate on an infield single by Alan Guild after reaching on a base hit to centerfield. Woodring also scored on the play due to a throwing error. Two batters later, a single up the middle from Phil Bernstein drove in pinch runner Henry Strmecki. That's as close as Middlebury could get as it fell by a final score of 10-7.

Colin Waters (0-2) suffered the loss, allowing seven runs on seven hits over a pair of innings. George Goldstein tossed three innings of scoreless, one-hit relief. Reliever Mack Wilkins (1-0) earned the win for Emory, allowing five runs and eight hits over four innings of work.

Smith, Woodring and Guild each had two hits on the day, while Carroll scored three times. Woodring finished with a double, homer and three RBI, while scoring twice.

Nj Kim went 2-2 with a double and three runs scored, Jack Rubenstein was 2-3 with two RBI, while Nick Chambers drove in four with a pair of this for the Eagles.
