Middlebury Falls to Stevens and Emory

The Middlebury baseball team returned to action on Saturday with two games in Atlanta, Georgia. Middlebury opened the day with an 11-4 loss to Stevens Institute of Technology (3-5), before falling by a score of 10-2 to host Emory (7-9) in the second game. The Panthers face Emory again on Sunday with the first pitch slated for 1:00 p.m.

In the first game of the day against Stevens, the Ducks opened the scoring in the top of the first inning with five runs on just two hits and were aided by three Panther miscues. Alex Detweiler had an RBI single for Stevens, while Donny Gherardi brought home a run with a groundout. The Ducks scored single tallies in the top of the second and seventh innings for a 7-0 lead. Stevens recorded four runs without tallying a base hit in the top of the eighth inning, helped by four batters who were hit by a pitch.

Middlebury got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the eighth with three runs. Justin Han singled up the middle, bringing home Henry Strmecki and Andrew Corcoran who both walked. Hayden Smith made the score 11-3 with a base knock to center field, driving in Sam Graf who was hit by a pitch.

The Panthers added on a single tally in the ninth when Corcoran scored on a sacrifice fly to right off the bat of Han.

Five different Panthers had a hit in the day's first game. Corcoran scored a pair of runs, while Han had two RBI. Strmecki drew three walks and also touched home plate once.

Colby Morris (1-1) took the loss on the mound for Middlebury, giving up seven runs (three earned) on six hits with three strikeouts in 6.2 innings of work. Jack Miller pitched the final 1.2 innings for the Panthers.

Tommy Barroner (2-4, 2 R), Thomas Paulich (2-4, R) and Detweiler (2-3, R) each had mutli-hit games for the Ducks, while Matthew Pasko tallied two RBI.

Chandler Brierley picked up the win for Stevens, allowing just one hit over 7.0 innings with nine strikeouts and four walks. Eli Zuckerman gave up three runs on two hits in his inning of work, while Alex Smith surrendered a run on two base hits in the ninth.

In the day's second game against Emory, the hosts took the early lead, plating a run in the top of the first on an RBI groundout from Christopher Stern.

Middlebury tied the contest at 1-1 in the top of the second when Kevin Woodring smacked a one-out single, coming around to score when Strmecki was hit by a pitch.

Emory regained the lead in the home half of the fifth. Jackson Grayson and Nick Chambers led off with back-to-back singles, moved up a base on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a base hit down the left-field line from Stern.

The Panthers pulled to within one at 3-2 in the top of the sixth. Graf reached on an error, moved to second on a walk and stole third. He scampered home on a sacrifice fly to center by Jake Dianno.

The Eagles scored seven times in the bottom of the seventh, highlighted by two-run doubles from Thomas Baumgartner and Jack Rubenstein, for the final 10-2 score.

Woodring went 2-3 with a double and a run scored, while seven other Panthers each had one hit. Dianno and Strmecki both collected an RBI.

Robert Erickson (0-1) tossed the first 5.0 innings for the Panthers and suffered the loss, allowing three runs on eight hits with three strikeouts. Justin Legowski pitched the next 1.1 innings, giving up five runs on three hits, while Andrew Martinson tallied two outs while allowing a pair of runs on two base hits. Bobby Sullivan struck out the side in the eighth.

Chambers (4-5, 3 R), Jacob Greene (2-4), Baumgartner (2-3, 2 RBI) and Rubenstein (2-3, 2 RBI) led the Eagles at the plate.

James Robertson (1-1) went the first 5.1 innings for Emory, allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits with four punchouts, while Brian Taggett recorded the next five outs. Henry Dimlow and Rhett Stuart both hurled an inning for the hosts.
