The Panther swimming and diving teams returned to action when they hosted Amherst on Saturday. The women fell by a 227-73 count to the Mammoths, while the men were defeated by Amherst, 224-73. Middlebury will complete first-semester competition next Saturday when it travels to Springfield for a dual meet beginning at 1:00 p.m.
During the men's competition, a pair of individuals earned second-place finishes. Aska Matsuda was second in the 500 freestyle (4:57.95), while touching the wall third in the 1,000 freestyle (10:15.17). Corey Jalbert was the runner-up in the 100 freestyle (48.51) and stopped the clock third in the 50 free (22.21).
Additional third-place efforts came from Cody Kim in the 100 breaststroke (1:00.34), Jack Dowling during the 200 butterfly (2:00.03) and Charles Quinn in the 200 individual medley (2:04.53).
In the day's opening event, the 200 medley relay quartet of Brendan Leech, Kim, Alex Corda and Jalbert was third (1:37.62).
On the women's side, the Panthers tallied four individual runner-up efforts during swimming events. Audrey Hsi touched the wall second in both the 100 backstroke (1:00.53) and the 200 back (2:11.41), while Maddie McKean finished as the runner-up in the 50 freestyle (25.26) and the 100 butterfly (1:01.04).
The Panthers recorded a second-place showing during the day's first event. The 200-yard medley relay team of Emma Borrow, Erin Kelly, Hsi and McKean posted a time of 1:52.51.
Third-place efforts were posted by Borrow in the 200 back (2:13.71), Angela Riggins during the 500 free (5:24.85) and Audrey Kelly in the 50 free (25.95). Ellie Thompson swam to third in the 100 fly (1:01.15).
The 400 free relay of McKean, Erin Kelly, Courtney Gantt and Kristin Karpowicz capped the day with a third-place swim (3:44.38).
