The Middlebury swimming and diving teams ended their respective opening weekends with a road dual meet Sunday at Tufts. The women fell to the 22nd-ranked Jumbos by a 167-116 count, while the men were defeated by 15th-ranked Tufts, 168-89. The Panthers return to the pool on Saturday, December 1 when they host a dual meet against Amherst.
The men also earned a trio of individual event victories. Aska Matsuda won the 500-yard freestyle, Jack Dowling touched the wall first in the 50 butterfly (24.85), while Charles Quinn won the 200 IM (2:07.36).
The Panthers ended the meet with a victory during the 400 free relay, as the team of Corey Jalbert, Bryan Chang, Keegan Pando and Brendan Leech posted a winning time of 3:20.69.
Runner-up finishes came from Max Eihausen in the 500 free (5:10.82), Cody Kim during the 200 IM (2:07.72) and Alex Corda in the 50 fly (24.93).
During women's action, the Panthers earned three individual victories. Angela Riggins won the 500-yard freestyle (5:24.92), while Maddie McKean claimed the 50 butterfly in 27.25. Kristin Karpowicz led the field to the wall during the 200 individual medley title with a time of 2:19.57.
In the final event of the day, the 400 free relay quartet of McKean, Audrey Hsi, Courtney Gantt and Erin Kelly won with a mark of 3:46.44.
Second-place efforts came from Ellie Thompson in the 200 IM (2:20.04), while Sarah McEachern during the 500 free (5:30.69). Emma Borrow was second in the 50 fly in 28.60, while Karpowicz ended as the runner-up in the 1,000-yard freestyle (11:03.10).
On the diving boards, Kacey Hertan claimed the 3-meter title with 205.80 points, while teammate Olivia Rieur was second with 201.52 points.
