Swim & Dive Teams Open Season With Meet Versus Conn. College

The Panther swimming and diving teams opened up their respective 2018-19 seasons with a road meet on Saturday at Connecticut College. The Middlebury women fell to the Camels by a 175-119 tally, while the men were defeated, 163-99. The Panthers return to the pool on Sunday with a road meet against Tufts beginning at 11:00 a.m.

The Panther men tallied three individual wins in the pool. Jack Dowling won the 200 butterfly in 2:00.69, while finishing second in the 100 fly (54.35). Corey Jalbert claimed the 50 freestyle in 22.29, while Charles Quinn stopped the clock first in the 200 individual medley (2:02.04).

Runner-up swims came from Aska Matsuda in the 1,000 free (10:14.94), Quinn during the 100 backstroke (55.18) and Cody Kim in both the 100 breaststroke (1:01.42) and 200 breaststroke events (2:15.44). Jalbert was second in the 100 free (48.94) for the Panthers.

The 200-yard free relay of Jalbert, Bryan Chang, Keegan Pando and Brendan Leech finished second in 1:29.29.

In the pool, the Panther women claimed three individual victories. Audrey Hsi won the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:12.57, just ahead of teammate Emma Borrow in second place (2:12.75). A few events later, Hsi claimed her second win of the day during the 200 individual medley in 2:14.46. Kristin Karpowicz also earned a top individual finish during the 500 freestyle with a mark of 5:16.56.

Second-place efforts came from Angela Riggins in the 1,000 free (11:11.12), Erin Kelly during both the 100 breaststroke (1:11.56) and the 200 breaststroke events (2:36.49), while Ellie Thompson touched the wall second in the 100 butterfly (1:01.80). 

The 200-yard medley relay consisting of Borrow, Kelly, Hsi and Maddie McKean was second with a time of 1:52.48.

On the diving boards, Olivia Rieur won the 1-meter event with 210.07 points, while teammate Mary Cate Carroll was second with 205.57 points.
