Box Score The Middlebury baseball team used a big six-run fourth inning on its way to an 11-4 road win at Bowdoin in five innings on Saturday. The game was shortened due to bad weather and the rain also wiped out the second game of the scheduled doubleheader. The Panthers (19-13) travel to Tufts on Sunday for a twin bill starting at 12:30 p.m.
Middlebury fell behind 1-0 after the opening inning, but jumped ahead with a pair of runs in the second. Kevin Woodring tied the game with a ground out scoring Justin Han, while Phil Bernstein delivered a RBI double to right field for a 2-1 lead.
The Polar Bears (15-18) knotted the score with a run in their half of the second and reclaimed the lead (4-2) in the third with a pair of runs on a home run to center field by Jack Wilhoite.
Middlebury exploded for six runs in the fourth inning, taking an 8-4 advantage. Woodring plated the first run of the frame with a RBI double to left field, while Grant Elgarten put the Panthers in front 5-4 with a two-run single to center. Brooks Carroll made it 6-4 with an infield hit, while Sam Graf capped the inning with a two-run double to left for the four-run lead.
Bernstein increased the lead to 10-4 in the top of the fifth with a two RBI double, while Ryan Rizzo drove him in with a sacrifice fly to center, making the final 11-4.
Bernstein powered the Panthers with a perfect 3-3 performance with two doubles, three RBI and two runs scored. Elgarten reached base twice with a double and a walk, while driving in two runs and scoring three times.
On the mound, Dylan Takamori (2-0) earned the victory with 2.1 innings of scoreless relief. Spencer Shores got the start and allowed four runs on five hits in 2.2 innings.
Bjorn Hansen went 2-2 with a walk for Bowdoin, while Wilhoite drove in two runs with his third homer of the spring. Starting pitcher Max Vogel-Freedman (2-3) took the loss, throwing three innings and yielding seven runs (six earned) on seven hits.
