Baseball Closes Home Season With Sweep of Plattsburgh

Middlebury wrapped up the home portion of its schedule with a doubleheader sweep of Plattsburgh on Forbes Field. The Panthers (18-13) took game one 10-5, before coming from four runs down in game two for a 7-5 win. Middlebury returns to action on Saturday with a doubleheader at Bowdoin. The Cardinals end their season with a 13-23 mark.

In game one, Middlebury scored an unearned run in the first, sparked by a triple to left by Jason Lock. The Panthers added four runs in the second inning, behind RBI singles from John Tipps and Gray Goolsby.

Plattsburgh got on the board in the third with a pair of runs, including a sacrifice fly by Stephen Bryant, cutting the deficit to 5-2.

Middlebury answered in the bottom of the inning with a pair of runs of its own, going on top 7-2.

The Panthers made it a seven-run game (10-3) in the fifth with three runs on four hits. Hayden Smith led off with a double to left and scored on a single to center by Ryan Rizzo. Brooks Carroll followed, belting a home run over the left-field fence.

Plattsburgh scored two in the seventh, including an RBI single through the right side by Ray Flynn, for the 10-5 final.

Robert Erickson improved to 3-2 with the win, allowing one earned run on two hits over four innings of work with a pair of strikeouts. Colin Waters threw a scoreless fifth, Grant Elgarten allowed a run in the sixth, as did Tucker Meredith in the seventh.

Goolsby finished the game 3-3 with a double, Smith went 2-3 with a double and three runs scored, while Tipps was 2-4 with a run scored and an RBI. Rizzo stole three bases, while Carroll swiped a pair.

Frank Finkbeiner (2-1) suffered the loss, allowing seven runs (six earned) on six hits over 2.1 innings of work. Ray Flynn and T.J. Montalbano each had a pair of hits for the Cardinals, while Joe Deland doubled.

Plattsburgh jumped out with four runs in the top of the first inning of game two. Bryant singled and scored on a homer to left by Deland. Three batters later, Billy Rombauts singled through the right side to drive in two more runs.

Middlebury's seven-run sixth inning saw the Panthers earn four hits, with two of the runs unearned. Kevin Woodring drove in a run with a fielder's choice to third before plated Woodring with a sacrifice fly to center. Carroll later double to left center to drive in two more runs for the 7-4 lead. Plattsburgh plated a run in the seventh for a 7-5 final.

Colby Morris (4-3) picked up the win with one inning of scoreless relief in the sixth frame.  Andrew Martinson allowed three earned runs and four hits over the first four innings, before Dylan Takamori tossed a scoreless fifth. Conor Himstead closed the game out, picking up his NESCAC-leading seventh save of the season.

Lock, Alan Guild and Smith each went 2-3 with a run scored, with a double from Lock. Rizzo earned a stolen base in the game, giving him 19 for the year, a new Middlebury single-season record.

Conor Lyons (1-4) suffered the loss for Plattsburgh, giving up four runs (none earned) and four hits in the sixth inning. Montalbano tossed four innings, allowing only three hits kits, while Brantley Marion allowed two unearned runs in the fifth on one hit.
