Playing in the NCAA Singles and Doubles Tournament on Friday, Middlebury men's tennis player Lubomir Cuba advanced to Saturday's final with a pair of straight-set victories. Later in the day, he teamed up with doubles partner William de Quant, advancing to the semifinals following a straight-set victory in a quarterfinal contest. Matches are being held at the Champions Club Tennis Complex at Rivermont Park in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
In the singles competition, the top seed Cuba jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the opening set during the quarterfinal against Chicago's Erik Kerrigan. Kerrigan won the ensuing five games for a 6-5 lead, but Cuba tied the set at 6-6 and won in the tiebreaker 7-4. With the second set knotted at 2-2, Cuba claimed the final four games for the 7-6 (4), 6-2 victory. Against No. 5 seed Branden Metzler of Kalamazoo in the semifinals, Cuba eased in straight sets by identical 6-2, 6-2 scores.
He will play in Saturday's final at 10:00 a.m. against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps' Nikolai Parodi, who defeated Chicago's Nicolas Chua in the other semifinal (6-0, 6-1). Cuba and Parodi played during the team semifinal on Tuesday, with Parodi edging Cuba in three tight sets (6-7 (5), 6-4, 7-5).
During doubles, Cuba and de Quant won four of the opening five games en route to a 6-3 victory in the first set against Gustavus Adolphus' Mohanad Al-Houni and Patrick Whaling. Cuba and de Quant, seeded second in the draw, scored the final four points of the second-set tiebreaker for a 6-3, 7-6 (4) victory.
The Middlebury duo will play the Carthage tandem of Herman Abban and Pawel Jawroski on Saturday at 11:30 a.m.
