The fourth-ranked Middlebury men's tennis increased its winning streak to five-straight contests, all coming against top-20 opponents, including a 7-2 home victory over #19 Tufts (5-4, 2-2) on Sunday. The match was played at the Proctor Tennis Courts. Middlebury (13-1, 3-0) returns to action Friday when it travels to Colby for a 3:00 p.m. match.
During doubles play, the Panthers secured two of the three points. The No. 3 duo of Allen Jackson and Timo van der Geest got the hosts on the board with an 8-3 win over Tufts' Griffin Brockman and Ross Kamin. Rohan Gupte and Zain Ali tied the score at 1-1 with an 8-4 victory in the top spot against Lubomir Cuba and William de Quant. The No. 2 flight of Hamid Derbani and Kyle Schlanger edged Tufts' Ben Battle and Zach Shaff in a tiebreaker, 9-8 (7) to give the hosts a 2-1 edge.
In singles play, the Panthers were victorious in five of the six matches. Cuba gave Middlebury a 3-1 advantage when he won in the top spot by scores of 6-1, 6-1 over Gupte. Nathan Niemiec brought the Jumbos to within one via a 6-2, 6-2 triumph over van der Geest.
The Panthers finished with four-straight victories to conclude the match. Jackson cruised over Kevin Kelly in the sixth spot (6-0, 6-3), while Schlanger clinched the match when he eased by Shaff in straight sets at No. 4 (6-3, 6-2). In the third slot, Derbani edged Danny Coran by scores of 6-4, 6-7 (8) and 10-5 in the superbreaker, while de Quant completed the scoring with a 7-6 (8), 6-2 victory over Ali.
