Colby Holds Off Men's Lacrosse Rally

Box Score

Colby held off a late surge by Middlebury (6-8, 3-6), picking up a 13-10 win over the Panthers on Youngman Field at Alumni Stadium. The home contest was the final of the year for Middlebury, who plays its last regular-season game at Williams on Wednesday. The Mules (3-10, 2-7) conclude their regular season at Bates on the same day.

Colby held a 3-1 lead early before A.J. Kucinski made it a one-goal game at the 10:01 mark with a man-up goal. The Mules responded with the game's next four goals, two in the first quarter to make it a 5-2 game after 15 minutes.

Kevin Seiler scored the first two of the second quarter for Colby, both assisted by Colton Michel. Middlebury answered with a quick pair of goals to make it a 7-4 game at the 4:55 mark. Matthew O'Neal netted the first, before John Jackson won a faceoff and scored himself just seconds later.

The Mules recorded the final goal of the half when Austin Sayre scored from a tough angle with 23 ticks on the clock to make it an 8-4 game at the break.

Action slowed in the third quarter, as Colby scored three of four goals to take an 11-5 lead into the final quarter of play.

Middlebury began its run early as Henry Riehl scored with a shot to the top corner of the net. Riehl struck again exactly 3:00 later with a bounce shot from 12 yards out. Frank Cosolito followed, before Danny Jacobs scored a man-up goal with a great dish from Kucinski to make it 11-9 with 8:37 remaining.

Colby won the ensuing faceoff and began to take time off the clock. The Panther defense took possession of the ball on four different occasions, but Middlebury turned the ball back over to Colby each time. The Mules took advantage at the 2:59 mark when Cillian Connor scored from 15 yards out to give his team some breathing room.

Riehl led Middlebury with four goals, Jacobs scored twice, while Kucinski added a goal and two assists. Jackson won 12-20 faceoffs and picked up seven ground balls, Nick Peterson finished with six grounders and caused two turnovers. Charles Midgley made six saves and allowed 11 goals in 45 minutes, while Will Ernst allowed a goal with a pair of saves in the fourth quarter.

Seiler's four goals paced Colby, while Sayre finished with three and two assists and Michel netted a pair with three helpers. C.J. Layton made nine saves in goal to earn the win.
