Second-Half Run Lifts Top-Ranked Middlebury Over St. Lawrence

Trailing 6-4 early in the second half, top-ranked Middlebury tallied the next nine goals on its way to a 13-7 victory Wednesday over the Saints on North Country Field. The Panthers (2-0) return to NESCAC play when they entertain Tufts on Sunday at 2:00 p.m.

The Saints were first on the board with an unassisted goal from Kayla Schmalz with 25:33 left in the opening half. The Panthers tallied four of the game's next six goals with three from Hollis Perticone, grabbing a 4-3 advantage with 6:19 left before halftime. The Saints scored the final two goals before the break via tallies from Julia Mitiguy at the 6:03 mark and Alexandra LaMotte just 1:19 before halftime for a 5-4 edge at the break.

After the break, Schmalz gave the hosts a two-goal lead just 39 seconds into the second half. The Panthers produced the decisive nine-goal run, fueled by two goals each from Henley Hall, Jenna McNicholas and Emma McDonagh, en route to the non-conference win.

Perticone led all players with three goals and an assist to go along with a career-high eight draw controls for Middlebury. Hall, McDonagh, Mary O'Connell and McNicholas each finished with two goals. Alex White picked up a game-best four ground balls, while Hall added three draw controls and a pair of caused turnovers. As a team, the Panthers scored six goals on nine free-position attempts.

St. Lawrence was led by Schmalz with three goals, while Mitiguy added two scores, two ground balls and caused two turnovers. Ashley Norris and LaMotte each added a goal for the Saints.

Julia Keith got the start in the crease for the Panthers, allowing six goals in 34:20 of action. Kate Furber came on in relief for the visitors, allowing just one goal with five saves in the final 25:40 for her first win of the season. Cricket Wemyss (1-3) made eight saves in goal for the Saints. Middlebury held a 26-19 advantage in shots and a 16-6 edge in draw controls led by Perticone's eight.
