The Middlebury men's tennis team started its spring break trip through Texas on the right foot with an 8-1 victory over UT Dallas at the Austin Tennis Academy in Austin, Texas. The fourth-ranked Panthers improve to 5-0 and return to the courts on Sunday against Southwestern (Texas) at 11:00 a.m., followed by a 5:00 p.m. contest at #20 UT Tyler.
The Panthers took two of the three doubles points against the Comets on Saturday. The tandem of William de Quant and Peter Martin picked up the first point with an 8-2 victory in the second spot over Christian Duarte and Eric Chen. Allen Jackson and Timo van der Geest made it a 2-0 Panther lead with an 8-5 win at #3 against Ashwin Vaithianathan and Ty Bohrnstedt. UT Dallas scored its lone point of the match with a narrow 9-8 (4) win from Hrudhay Ravula and Alberto Hernandez over Hamid Derbani and Kyle Schlanger in the top spot.
During singles action, van der Geest picked up the Panthers' fourth point with a 6-0, 6-0 score at #4 against Bohrnstedt. Derbani earned the match-clinching team point via a 6-2, 6-0 win in the third spot over Hernandez. The next two matches to finish concluded almost simultaneously when de Quant was victorious at #1 over Duarte (6-0, 6-2), while Schlanger picked up a win in the second spot against Mario Jelev (6-0, 6-1).
The final two flights left on court both needed a second-set tiebreaker to decide a winner. Jackson claimed a 6-2, 7-6 (5) win over Ravula at #5, while Alex Vanezis concluded the scoring with a 6-2, 7-6 (0) victory against Chen.
