Box Score Bowdoin's Daniel Buckman tied the game with 1:10 left and the won it in double overtime, as the Polar Bears (3-2, 2-1) earned a 14-13 road win at Middlebury (3-4, 1-3) on Saturday afternoon. The 16th-ranked Panthers return to action against RIT at Syracuse on Tuesday, while Bowdoin is back at it on Sunday afternoon at Williams.
Bowdoin held a 4-3 lead after the first quarter in a back and forth battle. Middlebury's Parker Lawlor tied the game early into the second, before a pair of Polar Bear tallies put them up 6-4 at the 13:58 mark. The Panthers responded with two-straight goals, as defender Eric Rogers caused a turnover and scored with an underhanded, sidearm shot to open the spurt. Bowdoin came back, netting the game's next three tallies to take a 9-6 lead with 10 seconds left in the half. Brett Kujala scored the first tally following off a face-off on a feed from Jimmy Young, while the two exchanged roles on the second goal. Middlebury quickly responded as the half came to a close when A.J. Kucinski scored on a dish from Henry Riehl eight seconds later with 2.2 ticks on the clock, making it a 9-7 Bowdoin lead at the break.
The lead grew to 10-7 on a man-up tally from Matthew Crowell in the third, before a goal from Kucinski circling the net, and a man-up effort from Danny Jacobs made it a one-goal game. The Polar Bears regained a three-goal advantage with Kujala finding both Young and Shawn Daly to put his team on top, 12-9 with 5:09 left in the third quarter.
John Simms opened a four-goal run for Middlebury, before a man-up goal from Jacobs made it a one-goal game (12-11) with 2:02 left in the third quarter. The run continued in the fourth when Jack Gould scored with a rocket from 10 yards, tying the game at 12-12 with 8:03 remaining. Lawlor gave the Panthers their first led since 3-2 when he found the back of the net with 2:14 remaining. Bowdoin won the ensuing face-off before Buckman tied the game at the 1:10 mark and forced the contest into overtime.
Bowdoin's Sam Carlin won the opening face-off, but the Polar Bears were unsuccessful on two attempts, including a save by Will Perry on Crowell at the 3:11 mark. Neither team scored on the next two possessions, as the game moved into a second overtime.
Carlin won the face-off to give his team possession, setting up the game-winner by Buckman, who drove to his right and scored with a high shot from 10 yards out.
Kucinski paced Middlebury with three goals and four assists, Jacobs scored three times, while Simms and Lawlor each earned two tallies. Riehl finished with four ground balls and two assists, Jack DeFrino paced the team with six ground balls, while Rogers added four. Will Ernst (24 min, 8 GA, 6 saves), Will Perry (29 min, 5 GA, 4 saves) and Charles Midgley (13 min, 1 GA, 2 saves) each saw time between the pipes for Middlebury.
Kujala led all scorers with four goals and three assists, Buckman earned three goals, while Crowell, Young and Daly each scored twice. Sam Carlin went 20-29 at the face-off X, earning 14 ground balls. Young scooped up seven ground balls for Bowdoin, while Max Nordeen caused three turnovers. Peter Mumford made a dozen stops in goal to earn the win.
