Panther Track & Field Teams Excel on Day One of NCAA Championship

The Middlebury men's distance medley relay team earned All-American honors and Maddie Pronovost set a school record during the pentathlon to highlight the first day of the 2017 NCAA Division III Indoor Championships. The two-day meet is being held at the Residence Hall/Recreation Center in Naperville, Illinois on the campus of North Central College.

Pronovost's school record came as she earned a third-place effort with 3,406 points in the pentathlon. She started her day with a school-record time of 8.99 for 912 points in the 60-meter hurdles, finishing second in the event. In the day's fourth event, she won the long jump with a leap of 17'5.25" for 645 points, while she tied for sixth in the high jump, clearing the bar at 5'1.75" for 701 points. She was also sixth in the 800-meter run, stopping the clock with a time of 2:27.12 for 729 points, while placing 15th in the shot put with a toss of 27'2.75" for 419 points.

The men's DMR crossed the line in third place for the second-straight All-American finish and third overall with the other two occurring in 2012 and 2016. The quartet of Nathan Hill, Alex Nichols, James Mulliken and Kevin Serrao stopped the clock with a time of 9:58.86. The Panthers were edged for the runner-up spot by the team from SUNY Geneseo (9:58.64). The top-eight places stopped the clock just 7.94 seconds.

The women's DMR team of Sasha Whittle, Paige Fernandez, Meg Wilson and Anna Willig raced to the line in a time of 12:06.26 to place 11th.

In preliminary action on Friday, Jimmy Martinez competed in the 400-meter dash, recording the fifth-best time of 48.81. He will run for a national title on Saturday at 3:15 p.m. Jonathan Perlman also competed as an individual, concluding with a time of 4:17.07 to finish 12th.

The final day of competition is scheduled to begin Saturday at 11:00 a.m.
