Panther Swimming & Diving Sweeps Springfield

The Panther swimming and diving teams concluded the first semester by hosting a dual meet on Saturday with Springfield. The men cruised by a 178-116 score for their first win of the season, while the women edged the Pride, 153-146. The Panthers take a break for the holidays before returning to action on Saturday, January 13, when they travel to Colby for a dual meet starting at 1:00 p.m.

In the women's competition, the Panthers recorded seven event victories in the pool. The 200-yard medley relay team of Sarah Bartholomae, Maya Gomez, Frances VanderMeer and Stephanie Andrews started the meet with a time mark of 1:50.64. In the day's last event, the 200-free relay team of VanderMeer, Erin Kelly, Audrey Kelly and Andrews stopped the clock in 1:39.76.

Gomez picked up a pair of individual wins for the Panthers. She outswam the field in both the 50 breaststroke (31.08) and the 100-yard individual medley (1:02.32). VanderMeer also earned two wins during the 50 free (24.44) and the 50 fly (26.29), while Bartholomae won the 50 back (29.46).

On the diving boards, Elissa DeNunzio claimed the 1-meter competition title with 239.40 points.

On the men's side, the team tallied eight wins in the day's 14 swimming events. Eight different Panthers posted individual event triumphs in the pool. Connor McCormick claimed both the 200-yard freestyle (1:46.77) and the 500 free (4:58.57), Morgan Matsuda touched the wall first in the 1,000 free (10:34.64), while Jack Dowling led the field during the 100-yard butterfly (53.38). Other wins came from Cory Jalbert in the 100 free (49.58), Brendan Leech during the 100-yard backstroke (54.97) and Stefan Pla in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:00.29).

Teammates Alex Smith and Nick Handali tied for the individual title in the 50 fly with a time of 24.52.

In the final event of the day, the quartet of Keegan Pando, Jalbert, Will Pannos and Leech posted a winning time of 1:29.56 in the 200-free relay.
