The Panther swimming and diving teams opened up their respective 2017-18 seasons with a home meet on Saturday against Connecticut College. The Middlebury women fell to the 10th-ranked Camels by a 191-103 tally, while the men were defeated, 176-104.

In the pool, the Panther women claimed a pair of individual victories. Georgia Houde won the 1,000 freestyle with a time of 11:06.14, while Frances VanderMeer touched the wall first in the 100 butterfly (58.78). Sarah McEachern was second behind Houde in the 1,000 free (11:09.64), while Maya Gomez finished as the runner-up in the 100 breaststroke (1:09.38). VanderMeer stopped the clock second in the 50 free (24.38).

The 200-yard free relay consisting of Gomez, VanderMeer, Erin Kelly and Stephanie Andrews was second with a time of 1:39.97.

On the diving boards, Elissa DeNunzio earned a pair of victories for the Panthers. She won the 1-meter event with 244.95 points, while claiming the 3-meter title with 251.85 points.

The Panther men tallied two victories in the pool. Kevin Santoro won the 200 backstroke in 1:59.47, just ahead of teammate Charles Quinn in 1:59.73. Connor McCormick led the field to the 200 breaststroke in 2:12.94, while he was second in the 200 free (1:47.42) and the 200 individual medley (2:01.75). Brendan Leech swam to a second-place finish in the 100 back (55.75).

The 200-yard medley relay of Quinn, Stefan Pla, Alex Smith and Cory Jalbert finished second in 1:39.35.

In the diving events, Mike Chirico claimed the 1-meter diving event with 290.55 points, while winning the 3-meter crown with 272.70 points.

The Panthers return to the pool on Sunday with a home meet against Tufts beginning at 1:00 p.m.
