#6 Middlebury Beats Wesleyan As DeLorenzo Earns 350th Victory

Box Score

The Middlebury field hockey team pushed its winning streak to five-straight victories with a 3-0 road NESCAC triumph Sunday at Wesleyan. The win was the 350th for head coach Katharine DeLorenzo, raising her overall career record to 350-124-2 in 26-plus seasons. The sixth-ranked Panthers (9-2, 6-1) continue conference play Saturday, hosting Trinity at 11:00 a.m.

Middlebury grabbed the early lead, scoring 6:33 into the contest. The play originated on a penalty corner, as Lauren Schweppe stepped toward the goal from the top of the circle, dishing a pass to Annie Leonard on her left. Leonard fired a shot past Cardinal goalie Delaney Wood for a 1-0 advantage.

The visitors doubled the lead with 6:08 remaining in the opening period. Grace Jennings carried the ball up the left side, before centering a pass to the front of the net, where Danielle Brown swept the offering into the Wesleyan cage for her fourth goal of the season.

In the second half, the teams traded chances early, but the Panthers were the ones who converted. Wesleyan's Tess Iannarone cut to the middle of the circle and fired a shot wide of the left post. Middlebury quickly pushed the ball up the field with the end result being Leonard's second goal of the game, as she one-timed a centering feed from Jennings just 4:45 into the fresh stanza. The goal was her team-leading eighth of the season.

The Cardinals (2-8, 0-6) had a chance to spoil the shutout in the final 10 minutes with a pair of corners and five shots, but none of the attempts were on the Middlebury net, making the final 3-0.

Panther goalie Abby Furdak earned the win without having to make a save, while Wood finished with 12 stops for Wesleyan. Middlebury held a 24-9 edge in shots, but held the Cardinals without a shot on goal. Going back to Saturday's win at Tufts, the Panther defensive unit has not allowed a shot on goal over the last 105:31 of game action.
