The Middlebury men's tennis team concluded its fall portion of its schedule by participating in the MIT Invitational over the weekend at the duPont Tennis Courts and the J.B. Carr Tennis Bubble. A main singles draw with 64 participants as well as a doubles bracket with 32 duos were both contested. After the first round of play in each bracket, consolation backdraws also took place.
In the singles main draw, William de Quant advanced to the final for the second-straight year with five victories. The No. 3 seed defeated Jayson Fung of Amherst (6-2, 4-6, 6-4) in the first round, and edged Brandeis' Jackson Kogan (7-5, 6-4) in the round of 32. He moved into the semifinals with victories over Bowdoin's Gil Roddy (6-3, 6-3) and Charles Deng of MIT (6-4, 6-0). In the semis, he edged teammate Kyle Schlanger by set scores of 6-2 and 6-4, before falling in three sets to Austin Barr of Williams (6-3, 5-7, 6-0).
Schlanger began his journey to the semifinal round with a straight-set win over MIT's Victor Cheng (6-1, 6-2). He tallied a 7-5, 6-1 victory over Ananth Raghavan of Williams in the round of 32, followed by a 6-3, 0-6, 6-2 win over teammate Noah Farrell in the round of 16. In the quarterfinal, he eased past Wesleyan's Andrew Finkleman (6-1, 6-0) before falling to de Quant in the semifinals.
Farrell and Nate Eazor both tallied two straight-set victories in the main draw. Farrell, the No. 2 seed, cruised past Justin Patel of Bowdoin (6-2, 6-0), before knocking off Nikhil Das of Brandeis (6-1, 7-5). Eazor posted a 6-3, 6-2 victory over MIT's Tyler Barr, followed by a 6-2, 6-4 win against Danny Coran of Tufts.
After dropping his opening-round match in the main draw, Timo van der Geest picked up four victories to win the backdraw title, including a 6-3, 6-4 win over Ethan Hillis from Amherst in the final.
