The Middlebury men's and women's indoor track and field teams opened the 2017 schedule Sunday at the 48th Dartmouth Relays, competing against programs from all NCAA Divisions and various club programs. The Panthers shined in the season opener with the women placing fifth with 22 points, while the men finished seventh with 11 points. Dartmouth won both titles with the Big Green men earning 189 points and the women with 202. Both teams return to action Saturday, hosting the Middlebury Winter Classic at 12:00 p.m. on the New Balance Track in the Virtue Field House.

The men's 4x200-relay team raced its way to a second-place finish when the quartet of Jimmy Martinez, Nicholas Hendrix, Joshua Howard and Alex Nichols boasted a time of 1:31.53. Minhaj Rahman just missed placing in the top 10 of the weight throw, finishing 11th with a toss of 46'2".

Nathaniel Durfee was seventh in the triple jump with a distance of 39'2.5" and John Natalone claimed eighth in the pole vault, clearing the bar at 13'7.25."

Hendrix added a 14th-place effort in the 60-meter dash (7.28), while Durfee finished in that same spot in the 60-meter hurdles (9.40).

Maddie Pronovost had a banner meet for Middlebury, placing in several events. She was fourth out of 29 competitors in the long jump with a distance of 17'2.75" and sixth in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 9.39 seconds. Pronovost was also 15th in the 60-meter dash (8.32 seconds).

In the 400-meter dash, Paige Fernandez won her heat and placed fifth overall (59.92), while Kreager Taber cleared a height of 10'6.25" to finish sixth in the pole vault. The 4x200 relay team of Marisa Edmondson, Pronovost, Emily Mellen and Fernandez combined for a time of 1:50.37 to place sixth overall. Kisha Kalra took eighth in the triple jump, bouncing her way to a distance of 33'.25". In the shot put, Helene Rowland was 10th with a heave of 37'.25".
