Panther Swimming & Diving Hosts Annual Middlebury Invitational

The Middlebury swimming and diving teams hosted the two-day Middlebury Invitational on Friday and Saturday inside the natatorium. The event featured no team scores as Williams, Springfield, Tufts and the University of Vermont took part in the meet, along with the Panthers.

During the women's competition, the Panthers picked up wins during three relays. The 200-free relay of Maya Gomez, Kristin Karpowicz, Grace Stimson and Stephanie Andrews finished with a time 1:38.94. The 200-medley quartet of Frances VanderMeer, Nora O'Leary, Gomez and Catherine Pollack touched the wall first in 1:50.80, while the 800 free relay comprised of Andrews, Caitlin Carroll, Alaina Pribis and Morgan Burke won in 7:50.85.

Individual wins came from Gomez in the 100 breaststroke (1:05.67), Andrews during the 50 free (24.49) and VanderMeer in the 100 free (53.19). Additional victorious efforts were tallied by Hannah Kredich during the 1,650 free (18:31.92) and Claire Treesh in the 100 back (59.45).

The Panther men recorded a trio of runner-up finishes during relay events. The 400-medley relay of Justin Cho, David Hogan, Will Pannos and Charles Quinn tallied a time of 3:36.86, while the 800-free quartet of Michael McGean, Jack Dowling, Andrew Grant and Morgan Matsuda stopped the clock in 7:11.17. Rounding out the runner-up relay showings was the 400-free squad of Brendan Leech, Noel Antonisse, McGean and Connor McCormick in 3:14.01.

Individually, McCormick swam to second place in the 500 free (4:45.99), while Pannos wound up second in the 100 breaststroke (1:00.40).

On the diving board, Will Greene claimed the 1-meter title with 479.95 points.

The Panthers will have a couple weeks off from competition before hitting the pool for the NESCAC Championships. The women's meet will take place February 10-12 at Bowdoin, while the men's championship is February 17-19 at Wesleyan.
