Middlebury won its second-straight NESCAC Championship and eighth overall with a 5-1 win over second-seeded Bowdoin in the title match at the Portland Racquet Club & Fitness Center in Maine. The top-seeded Panthers (16-2), who earn a conference-best eighth title, all in the last 12 years, receive an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament and will hope to host a regional when the selections are announced on Monday afternoon, while the Polar Bears (15-3) will likely earn an at-large bid to the tournament.
Middlebury took an all-important 3-0 lead after doubles play. Palmer Campbell and Hamid Derbani topped Luke Trinka and Luke Tercek by an 8-5 at #1 to start things off. William de Quant and Timo van der Geest followed at #3 with a similar 8-5 win over Gil Roddy and Chase Savage. The second pairing featuring Middlebury's Ari Smolyar and Noah Farrell versus Kyle Wolfe and Jerry Jiang saw the Panthers emerge with an 8-3 victory.
Middlebury was one point away rather quickly in singles play, as Farrell made quick work of Tercek in the top flight by scores of 6-3, 6-2. Bowdoin scored its point when Grant Urken recorded a 6-3, 7-5 victory over van der Geest at #6, but Derbani sealed the championship with a 7-5, 6-4 win over Roddy in the fifth spot.
In the three matches remaining on the court when the decision took place, Smolyar dropped the first set 6-3 to Wolfe at #2 but was up a break (4-2) in the second. Campbell fell in the opening set in the third spot by a 6-3 score to Trinka, but led 4-3 in set number two. At #4, de Quant tallied a 6-3 first-set win against Jiang but trailed in the second, 6-5.
